Starport: Galactic Empires 2.0

Games – that is the most frequent answer I get when I ask friends and colleagues why the do not leave Microsoft’s Windows operating system behind and move on to something like Linux or Apple’s Mac OS X. Computer users love their games and they love the fact that most games are built for the Microsoft’s developed Windows operating system. Stop to think about it, games were the driving force behind my first PC purchase back in the day.

Out of all the games out there, I would like to draw attention to a free, space oriented 2D MMO game called Starport: Galactic Empires. Since it doesn’t cost a thing, you don’t have anything to lose. You could very well download the game and give it a shot. If you don’t like it, you can always uninstall it.

Here is what will draw you in. The action takes place in outer space – the game is part space simulator an part RPG game. You get to explore the immensity of outer space, conquer and colonize planets. On your colony you get to harvest resources, earn money and upgrade your weapons. You are going to need weapons since you are going to engage in tactical combat with other players.

Here’s one more teaser straight from the developers of the game: “Several hundred years in the future, scientific breakthroughs have brought on a golden age of space exploration. Amidst this booming new frontier, there is colonization, piracy, and wonder. Empires are forged and destroyed across epic space battles in the never-ending quest for glory. For a bold and cunning captain, the future is unlimited.”

What could be more exciting that battling other players for universe dominance in a semi-realistic space and atmospheric environment?
